If you keep explaining the same thing at the start of every conversation, stop. Save it once.
An assistant is a saved set of instructions. You start a conversation from it and it already knows how you want it to behave.
This is what replaces "Projects" if you are used to ChatGPT.
Find Agents in the side panel, create one, and give it:
You do not need to build anything complicated. The instructions are just plain English.
Editor emails
You help me write short, warm emails to freelance editors. Keep them under 150 words. Always ask for a specific date rather than "soon". Never invent a fee, a deadline or a job number — if you need one, leave a blank marked [ ] and tell me what is missing. British spelling.
Academic English polishing
You improve the English of academic manuscripts by non-native speakers. Make the meaning clearer. Never change technical terminology, citations, figures or author names. If a technical term looks wrong, list it at the end instead of changing it. When you finish, list every change you made.
Japanese website content
You help prepare Japanese content for the Uni-edit website. Use natural, professional Japanese, not translated-sounding Japanese. Preserve all links and page structure. Ask before changing any factual claim. Explain your changes to me in simple English.
Customer explanations
You help me explain editing decisions to customers who are not native English speakers. Be warm and concrete. Never imply the customer's writing was poor. Never promise a date or a price.
If that feels like effort, describe what you want and let it draft the instructions:
Write me a set of instructions for a reusable assistant that helps me prepare concise, friendly emails to editors. It should ask me for missing job details rather than inventing them, and never state a deadline or a rate I have not given it.
Then paste the result into a new assistant.
A prompt is a saved piece of text you use often — a template rather than a personality. Find Prompts in the side panel.
Good candidates are things you retype: a standard request for a manuscript check, the wording you use to ask for a summary in a particular shape, a checklist you always apply.
| Use | |
|---|---|
| "I want it to always behave this way for this kind of work" | Assistant |
| "I want to reuse this exact wording" | Prompt |
| "Just this once" | Neither — type it |
An assistant's instructions apply to everything you do in that conversation. If you build an assistant that never changes technical terms and then ask it to rewrite a marketing page, it will be oddly conservative. Start a normal conversation for work that does not fit.
